Lesson Duration Options
1hour lessons
45min lessons
30min lessons (recommended for recreational – i.e. no exams or festivals and 8 & under students)
Registration/Materials Fee:
There is a non-refundable registration/materials fee for each student. It includes providing all original sheet music and print outs (not including RCM books), organizing recitals, checking over music festivals and exam registrations, organizing accompanists when I am unable to accompany, providing props and sets for music performances and festivals etc.
Payment:
A total of 32 lessons will be charged, covering the first week of September to the last week of June. Payments for lessons are due in 6 installments of equal amounts: Each installment is due by the 15th of each month from September to November, then January to March inclusive. Payments can be made in cash, post-dated cheques or via e-transfer. NSF cheques will be subject to an additional $45 fee. Please make any e-transfers to yvonnezhang19@gmail.com.
Make-up Policy:
There are no make-up lessons for those parents/students cancel. The lesson fee is also to guarantee the student a weekly time spot. Just as there are no refunds for missed sports practices, there will be NO adjustments made to the lesson fees. You may opt to include your contact info in my studio’s “swap” list. This list will allow you to email another student on the list to see if they can switch lessons, when you know you have to cancel in advance. If you cannot find a student to swap with you, the lesson will unfortunately be forfeit. If lessons need to be cancelled on my part, I will try to the best of my ability to arrange an alternate time. Alternatively, there will be 3 days allotted for make-up lessons (June 17, 18, 19) for lessons I have cancelled.

Please let me know if you are arriving late to your lesson. If I do not hear from you 15 minutes after your lesson start date, I will assume you are skipping the lesson.

Summer Lessons:
Summer lessons are optional, as I understand that many students have a multitude of activities. Lessons in the summer months are pay-as-you-go, with a 72-hour cancellation window.
Discontinuation:
In the event that a student is unable to continue for any reason, written notice (via email or text) must be given at least 4-weeks in advance. This duration will allow the time slot to be filled by another student.
Recitals:
There will be two (2) studio recitals held this year – a Christmas recital in December (Sunday December 14 2PM) and another in June (Sunday June 7 - 2 recitals). Each student is highly encouraged to participate in both recitals should they occur. These recitals are complementary as they are included in the registration fees. The venue location will be announced at a later date.
Festivals:
There are 3 music festivals – 1 in the fall and 3 in the spring for singers. There are 3 music festivals a year for pianists –3 in the spring. Oakville Vocal Arts Festival will be in the fall, Peel Music Festival, Hamilton Music Festival and Brant Music Festivals are in the spring. A fall newsletter will be sent out later outlining further details and registration deadlines for new students. Although festivals are not mandatory, students are ENCOURAGED to participate in music festivals for the opportunity to receive feedback, and more importantly, to listen and learn from other students’ performances. The number of classes and festivals you would like to participate in is up to you.
Exams:
As with festivals, Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) exams are recommended, but not mandatory. Exams aim to develop musicianship skills (e.g. ear training, sight reading, and pattern recognition) that can aid students in learning music faster. Higher level exams will also earn students high school music credits. Finally, this is another opportunity to receive feedback from qualified adjudicators. The level I suggest for each student takes into consideration their experience, their current musicianship skills and most importantly the student’s age for singers. Unlike instruments, a singer’s voice is inside them and grows with their body, so it takes time to develop and mature. There are 3 sessions of exams for singers – January, June and August. There are 4 sessions for pianists – January, April, June and August. The deadline to register for exams is usually 1 month prior. A reminder email will be sent out to students well before the exam deadline.
